Social Intership

What is social internship?

Social internship involves young people in secondary education doing volunteer work as part of their school career. In this way they get to know their immediate environment in a different way and make an active contribution to society.

Social internship principles:
Social internship is not mandatory. Schools decide for themselves whether they want to make social internships part of their curriculum. A social internship consists of voluntary work for a non-profit organization (think of a healthcare institution or volunteer organization) or a social project of a company where there is no profit motive. The school may count a maximum of 30 hours of social internship per student as teaching time. This may be spread over several school years. The school has the final responsibility and together with the internship broker, the internship organization and the student determines the content of the social internship.

Social internship involves doing volunteer work. This takes place mainly in the non-profit sector: at a volunteer organization, association, institution or social organization. Sometimes outside of an organized context, for example by running errands for an elderly neighbor or helping a family that needs temporary help. Companies can also play a role in corporate social responsibility.

The school is in charge and ultimately responsible
The school is responsible for the social internship of its students. Preparation and evaluation are in the hands of the school. The school also determines what is or is not suitable as a social internship. Together with the students, the school makes proper arrangements for the execution of the social internship, including supervision.

Room for initiative for schools and students
Students are more motivated when the social internship matches their interests. The societal internship is more rewarding. Therefore, stimulating own initiative is important. After a good explanation, students often already know where they would like to do their social internship. The student can think of an internship and ask the school if it is suitable as a social internship. A placement address is not always necessary; a student or school can also set up a sponsorship for a good cause. If the student does not manage to find a social internship, the school provides support.

Creativity first:
Anything is possible, as long as it involves volunteer work. It takes creativity from schools, internship providers and internship brokers to offer all students a fun and challenging internship placement.

Your Social Work placement in Uganda
We as a Dutch Foundation have a school project in the north of Uganda.
Within this project we have a Kindergarten and Primary School.

Besides education we provide the following:
- 2 Meals per day for the children and staff
- Schooling at the level of each child
- 3 sets of clean clothes per child per week
- Shoes and socks for all children

Opportunities during your internship:
During your internship in our project in Uganda we will take care of your supervision, transportation, meals and housing.
You can add real value to our project and your personal development by working in our school and living in a family environment in the village of Ayul, Kitgum Province, Northern Uganda.

Cost and duration of internship:
We see you as an ambassador of our project in the Netherlands and try to keep the costs as low as possible for you.
Therefore we only charge the minimum cost and you have to pay for your own ticket.

We prefer to see at least a group of 4 young people doing the internship together in our project.
This is because then the costs of transportation and guidance can be shared and the costs per person are much lower.
With 4 people the total costs excl. ticket are +/- € 500,- per person.

Duration of the internship:
Given the distance and duration of travel we recommend at least 14 days, preferably 21 days.
But this is always in consultation with us to adjust.
